Students attend media summit in new location, learn relationship of digital age, media. The 10th annual Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit focused on the new age of information and how new sources affect how people gather their news. Borrelli Jr., who graduated from Oswego State in 1977, created the media summit in 2005.

In addition to signing this important bill, Governor Cuomo needs to follow the lead of the NYS Senate by investigating and addressing how our own NYS Department of Health policies and actions are hurting NYS patients, who are ill with Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses. These questionable policies include testing recommendations and licensing, treatment guidelines, physician education, and the unwarranted investigation of NYS Lyme treating physicians by the NYS OPMC.

An investigation has been launched by Gov. Andrew Cuomo into companies who are part of the process of loan refinancing. The investigation, announced in a press release from Cuomo’s office, will run through a division of the New York State Department of Financial Services. The average student loan debt of a New York college student is $24,803 according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s 2012 fourth quarter student loan debt analysis.

Andrew Cuomo, speaking at Rockland Community College last week, announces his plan to attack what he calls a statewide heroin epidemic. The approach to tackling abuse of the drug focuses on enforcement, education and response and is adding 100 State Troopers to a narcotics unit. SUNY is also taking steps to reduce heroin use among students by creating a hotline and textline to report incidents.
Tom Libous, R-Binghamton, was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury for allegedly making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigations. His son was also indicted on other charges. An investigation dating back to March 2010 revealed that Libous promised a law firm, referred to as "Law Firm 1" in the indictment, that he would bring them business if they hired his son, Matthew.
Ignoring pleas from environmental groups, the state's Public Authorities Control Board approved a $256 million loan from a clean water fund to help build the new Tappan Zee bridge. The move comes just days after a group of environmentally-conscious advocates asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo to reveal a full financial plan for funding of the project.
START-UP NY is an initiative spearheaded by Cuomo to entice businesses to move, expand or begin their future in New York. It creates tax-free zones for the businesses for 10 years and the companies will pay no income tax, business or corporate state or local taxes, sales tax, property tax or franchise fees.
A critical hole was found in the coding of the Internet’s iron wall, potentially causing security breaches for millions of websites. This hole has been named the Heartbleed bug and affects websites using OpenSSL to protect their encrypted data like passwords and other crucial information users enter.

Oswego County voters turned out in low numbers on Sept. 9 for the Democratic primary in the race for governor. While the county does not have a majority of democratic voters, there were 17, 592 active voters enrolled in the party in April, according to the New York State Board of Elections. Of those voters, 903 turned out to show their support for one of three candidates vying to run as a Democrat in the Nov. 4 general election.

Five Oswego State students received SUNY’s highest recognition for excellence last week. The 2015 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was awarded to Dianora DeMarco, Joshua Drake, Molly Matott, David Owens and Eyub Yegen in a ceremony at the Empire State Plaza in Albany on April 2. DeMarco is a five-year accounting-MBA major from Bronx, N.Y. and a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi.

Lakers look to unseat Red Dragons, capture baseball program's 13th conference crown. The Oswego State Lakers finished up their regular season SUNYAC play and will begin preparation for the 2015 SUNYAC tournament. The Lakers (23-8, 14-4 SUNYAC) are in position to finish the season in second place in the SUNYAC conference behind SUNY Cortland (29-2, 14-1 SUNYAC).

The Oswego State Lakers avoided elimination in the 2015 SUNYAC Baseball Championship Tournament in a slugfest against the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils. The Lakers (25-10, 14-4 SUNYAC) held the Blue Devils (14-19, 8-10 SUNYAC) scoreless through six innings with Brendyn Karinchak (W, 7-2) on the mound.
